Olívio Jekupé

Olívio Jekupé was born in Paraná. He studied at the School of Communication and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA-USP), where he had the opportunity to see the situation of indigenous people in the city and to understand how his relatives were portrayed by non-indigenous culture. From there, he started writing indigenous stories. At first, Olívio wrote passionate poems; then he wrote about myths and stories of denunciations, such as that of Angelo Kretã, an indigenous leader who was murdered. He was, in fact, the first indigenous writer in Brazil. In his writing, Olívio seeks to present Brazilian society with a new perception of what the indigenous and the Guarani actually are.
